A Plein - Air Adventure into the Mountains

In May of 2022 my husband and I along with our golden retriever Duke ventured off to the mountains in Jasper, Alberta.

One of the things I like most when I go on holiday is to paint Plein-Air, which means to paint outdoors, on-site. I always take my portable Van Gogh watercolour set, a few favourite brushes, an Arches watercolour block and a little sketchbook. I like to use an archival black ink pen and do a quick sketch.

The light changes rapidly so I have to work quickly to capture the brilliance of the colours and capture the shadows. I also like to take a few reference photos for when I return to my studio.

The next time you go on holiday take along a journal and create a lasting memory of your holiday.

Keep an eye out for my Watercolour Journaling Workshop where I teach you how to document all the memorable moments on your holiday. You won’t want to miss this one.

Shelley Williamson

Shelley Williamson is a Canadian painter living in northern Alberta. She had a dream to one day live in the countryside with horses, dogs, cats and chickens, and paint. It took a while but her dreams came true, and that is exactly what she did. She lives in a beautiful rural area with her family, surrounded by expansive farming fields, glorious forests and big blue skies. The nature that surrounds her is her source of inspiration, and she feels most at home in her little piece of paradise. Who can resist waking up to the sounds of chattering squirrels or listening to the morning songs of the chickadees? Shelley loves to paint in her outdoor studio under a beautiful canopy of rustling leaves on warm sunny days.
